Get Ready for RiverDogs Baseball

It’s time to play ball! The Charleston RiverDogs will open the gates to fans for home opening night on Tuesday, April 5, 2024, at 7:05 pm at “The Joe” when they welcome the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers to the Holy City.  Plan to come out and cheer on the RiverDogs baseball team!

Coming off of three championships, and due to unprecedented demand for tickets, the RiverDogs announced Monday Jan. 29 that single game tickets are on sale now. Coinciding with that announcement, the Tampa Bay Rays Single-A affiliate unveiled dates for the top promotional highlights of the season as well. Tickets are available for purchase directly from the team at RiverDogs.com, and will be conveniently delivered and accessible on a mobile device.

The Charleston RiverDogs are the Single-A Affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. They play in the Joseph P. Riley Stadium, also known as “The Joe”, which sits near the Ashley River and catches the breezes from the river and adjoining marshland. It has been rated one of the best stadiums in the minor league and collegiate levels. (The Citadel baseball team plays there as well.)

Update on Captain Sam’s Spit

The following article appeared on the Kiawah Island Community Association Blog:

Agreement Conveys a Portion of Captain Sam’s Spit to the Kiawah Island Community Association

The Kiawah Island Community Association (KICA) is pleased to announce that Kiawah Partners has agreed to transfer by quitclaim deed the non-buildable land at Captain Sam’s Spit, as stated in the Amended and Restated Development Agreement, to the community association to hold in common for the benefit of the membership.

Captain Sam’s Spit is approximately 155 acres of undeveloped land at the western end of Kiawah Island, surrounded by water on three sides, where the Kiawah River inlet meets the Atlantic Ocean. This agreement means that a portion of the spit will be held by the community association, which represents all members on Kiawah Island.

Dolphins strand feeding at Captain Sam’s Inlet

The land to be conveyed is a refuge for wildlife, providing the sandy shores for a rare and captivating hunting behavior: bottlenose dolphin strand feeding. It’s one of the few places in the world where dolphins corral fish along the shore, and then create a wave to push the fish and themselves onto the beach to eat the fish before sliding back into the water. It’s also a restful retreat for migrating shorebirds like red knots and the piping plover. Kiawah’s bobcats roam the spit and loggerhead sea turtles use the oceanside beach as their nesting ground each summer.

Captain Sam’s Spit has been owned by Kiawah’s master developer, now Kiawah Partners, since the 1970s. It’s one of Kiawah’s few remaining pieces of undeveloped land, and now Kiawah Partners has taken the significant step to convey the non-buildable property to the community association.

Program Description:

Recent research on the federally threatened Red Knot estimates over 17,000 knots utilize Seabrook and Kiawah Islands, making this area a critical spring stopover site for this migratory shorebird that has declined over 85% in recent decades. Red Knots undertake astounding migrations every year, some flying nearly 19,000 miles from their wintering grounds, as far south as Tierra del Fuego at the southern tip of South America, to their breeding grounds above the Arctic Circle. On Seabrook and Kiawah Islands, knots rest at high tide and at low tide, feeding on the abundant coquina clams that live at the surf zone. On our beaches they transition into breeding plumage and build muscle and fat reserves that fuel their next flight. In May 2023, biologists deployed satellite transmitters on knots. These tags are glued to the bird’s back and have a solar panel energy source. Join us to learn about SCDNR’s Red Knot tagging project, that allows us to track knots’ local movements and to follow them to their nest sites in the Arctic. These projects and partnerships are making tangible conservation achievements in the protection of knots!

Speaker Bio:

Felicia Sanders has been working 30 years on conservation efforts for a wide diversity of bird species and joined South Carolina Department of Natural Resources in 2001 and leads South Carolina’s Seabird and Shorebird Projects. Her primary tasks are promoting conservation of important sites for nesting and migrating coastal birds, surveying seabirds and shorebirds, and partnering with universities to research their life histories. She is a coauthor on numerous scientific publications and has traveled to the Arctic five times to participate in shorebird research projects. Felicia Sanders went to graduate school at Clemson University, majoring in biology. In 2020 she was awarded the Biologist of the Year by the Southeastern Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, whose members include 15 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

It is not too late to join or learn more about the Seabrook Island Shorebird Steward Program! We invite you to visit the Seabrook Island Birders webpage and visit the Shorebird Stewards tab. Sign up with your spouse or a friend, or meet new friends during the upcoming training sessions. Send an email to SIBStewards@gmail.com to join the group or ask for more information. It is a rewarding experience that you will surely come to cherish.
