Yin Yoga – This is a slow, soothing, and meditative style of yoga that targets the deep connective tissues, bones, joints, fascia, and ligaments in the body. In Yin Yoga, floor-based poses are held passively for about two to five minutes to work into our connective tissues. The legs, hips and lower back are the main benefits of this practice. The more we work our fascial system and deep tissues, the less dense and tight our bodies become as we age. Movement and stretching hydrates fascia and literally help slow the aging process.
-Tuesdays, February 7 – 28 at 5:15 pm. $60 for the series.
-This series is taught by Natasha Stevens.

Chair Yoga Semi-Private – Using a chair, participants will gently mobilize their joints, stretch their muscles, learn various breath exercises, and practice mindfulness techniques. Benefits of chair yoga include improved flexibility, better concentration, increased strength, boost to your mood, reduced stress and joint strain. Whether you are recovering from surgery or looking to find an alternative to the up and down motions of traditional yoga, chair yoga can help. Chair Yoga is taught by Natasha Stevens.
– Wednesdays, February 1 – 22 at 2:30 pm. $60 for the series
– This series is taught by Natasha Stevens.

Yoga for Strength & Balance Training – Focus for Strength & Balance Training – Focus on Fall & Fracture. Weeks 1 and 2 of this series will focus on the foundation of our balance (our feet and ankles) and move upward to work on strengthening of the knees and hips. Weeks 3 and 4 focus on the importance of abdominal and upper body strength. Yoga poses practiced will build strength and sharpen our balances reflexes, helping to improve our responses in unstable situations. This series is for beginners and/or those new to yoga.

This practice is designed for those with knowledge of yoga poses and who desire to enhance their practice to build bone, strengthen muscle, increase flexibility, and improve balance and posture. SIAG February Artist of the Month Patrick Connelly

Patrick Connelly was raised in northern New Jersey, graduated from Bucknell and Northeastern Universities, and lived in the Boston area for 34 years before moving to South Carolina in 2010.  He has been happily married to Lora Connelly for 46 years and is the proud father of two sons, and grandfather of five grandchildren.  In 2018 Connelly retired from his 41-year career as a professional civil engineer and chief operating officer of an engineering consulting firm.

Although he consistently enjoyed perusing art galleries and talking with artists, Patrick began painting only upon his retirement after being encouraged to paint by a talented artist.  Connelly never looked back and continues to enjoy the thrill of learning the challenging process of observation, mixing paints to create colors, and applying paint to canvas to try to express the beauty of God’s creation.

After joining the Seabrook Island Artist Guild in 2018 he was elected to serve as President of the Guild in 2020.  He enjoys painting in both oils and acrylics, and is grateful to collaborate with so many talented artists.

During the pandemic, Patrick often painted online with his granddaughter Ailyn.  His goals during these Zoom sessions were to enjoy interacting with his 7-year-old granddaughter and help her learn to paint.  He affectionately signed these quick, small paintings as “Papoo”, his granddad name and has included a number of the paintings from those precious online sessions as part of his Artist of the Month exhibit at the Lake House.

There will be reception for Patrick on Thursday, February 2 from 4:30 – 6:00 pm at The Lake House. We hope you will come out, talk with Patrick and enjoy viewing his works of art.

SI Photo Club Announces Susan Culler Soden as Quarterly Featured Photographer

Artist’s Reception
Monday, January 16 4:30-6:00 pm
Lake House (by Photo wall)

Susan’s work will be posted on the Featured Photographer Wall at the Lake House. The wall is located in the hallway just before the library. Please join us for an artist’s reception on Monday, January 16 from 4:30-6:00 pm at the Lake House (by the Photo Wall).

Photographer’s Statement:

My interest in photography began in the mid 1950’s when, as an elementary student, I accompanied my dad as he photographed weddings. I was his assistant, handing him one tray of film at a time for his Speed Graphic camera, as he hurried to change the individual flash bulb and prepare for the next shot.

Perhaps the most challenging photography of my life came in a five-year period of volunteering for the Hospice Unit of Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. As the volunteer photographer for the unit, I was called on short notice to photograph infants who often passed away hours after I photographed them. I was determined that the families would have professional pictures that documented the details of their child.

We visited Seabrook for 22 years before buying in 2020 and I would spend most of my vacation photographing the nature and wildlife on our beautiful island as well as documenting our children and grandchildren at Seabrook.

Living here and being able to photograph on an almost daily basis is a dream come true for me! I am totally in love with our island and have a special place in my heart for the dolphins. As a volunteer for Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network, I spend countless hours watching these beautiful creatures. I have met so many wonderful residents and visitors at the inlet and made many new friends.

The Seabrook Island Photography Club has given me a group of fellow photographers to learn with and further develop my passion for photography. Come join us!

This presentation will demonstrate easy-to-use photo editing apps and other ways to use your phone in fun and creative ways. Kate Silvia will discuss different apps that enable you to capture photos with creative effects. This presentation is not just specific to iPhones but includes other mobile devices as well. These apps can be used on any image on your phone – even photos moved from another device via the cloud or something similar.

Kate will demonstrate a wide variety of photo editing/processing apps from the basic to the extreme. Some examples are Snapseed, Lenslight, MotionLeap and many more. Kate will briefly demonstrate these apps so you’ll be able to see them in action before you download or purchase them.

Kate Silvia is a professional landscape photographer and educator based in Charleston, South Carolina. Her passion for the natural world is matched only by the desire to share that passion with her students. Kate is a natural teacher and is often requested to speak at camera clubs and photo organizations throughout the Southeastern U.S. and beyond. She offers e-books, online photo classes, and more on her website.

This meeting is free to 2023 SI Photo Club members. Non-Photo Club Guest fee is $10 (which can be applied to an annual $30 membership).
