Happy Thanksgiving from Your Tidelines Team

As we enjoy this holiday, we are continuing an American tradition that dates back to 1621. We have always heard that Governor William Bradford began this feast to celebrate the Pilgrims’ first successful corn harvest, inviting the local Indians to join them. The real story is that the Pilgrims celebrated their successful harvest by shooting their guns into the air, which caused Massasoit, the Indian Chief, to bring together warriors and prepare for battle. Instead of fighting, the Wampanoag and Pilgrims worked together to prepare a feast. Although the celebration dates back to then, it wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that Abraham Lincoln declared a national Thanksgiving Day to be held every November.
We gather on this special day to be thankful for the family we love, the friends we cherish, and for the many blessings in our lives. May your Thanksgiving holiday be full of love, laughter, and gratitude.

Reminder: Holiday Canned Food Drive at The Lake House

9th Annual SIPOA
Holiday Canned Food Drive
November 1 – December 10, 2024

Goal – 5,000 pounds
Thank you to those in Seabrook Island who have supported the Holiday Canned Food Drive. As we gather today to share a Thanksgiving meal and give thanks for all that we have let’s remember that many of our neighbors on Johns and Wadmalaw Island deal with hunger on a daily basis.
To date we have collected 2,391 pounds of canned food. With 12 days to go, we are half way to the goal of collecting 5,000 pounds of canned goods. Let’s stretch and reach that goal!
Please consider purchasing extra cans of food, or even better, multi-packs of canned food items, for distribution to the clients of the Sea Islands Hunger Awareness Foundation(SIHAF). Protein items like hearty or chunky soups, stews, chili, corned beef hash, tuna, and canned chicken, as well as canned vegetables and fruit, are especially appreciated. Please check expiration dates before donating.
Donations and contributions can be delivered to The Lake House lobby. Place your items in the bin under the new donations sign behind the column.
Thank you!

What were historic holidays like in Drayton Hall?

Was it cozy or cold? Was it secular or spiritual? What are the twelve days of Christmas, anyway—and exactly why isn’t there a Christmas tree?
This tour will unwrap the evidence and explore the origins of some modern-day Christmas traditions as we discover how people at Drayton Hall celebrated the holidays.
