Construction Begins to Alleviate Traffic on Johns Island

The Sunday, March 16 issue of The Post and Courier reported that Charleston County will begin construction projects to help with the traffic situation on Johns Island and West Ashley. These improvements are part of a larger project for Main Road from Bees Ferry Road to Betsy Kerrison Parkway. These improvements include:

  • Flyovers at the intersection of Main Road and US Highway 17
  • An interchange at Main Road and US Highway 17 for those who want to avoid the intersection
  • A bridge over CSX Railroad
  • A roundabout at the intersection of Main Road, Chisholm Road, and River Road

Most of the work will be done overnight, but currently, they are doing testing on various aspects of the construction. The project is scheduled to be completed by September 2028.

What this means for us is that there will be delays getting on and off the island on Main Road and US Highway 17. Please take this into account when you are heading to the airport or an appointment. An alternate route to the airport is going up River Road, through James Island to I-26.
