Have you heard of the Murph Challenge?
The official Murph Challenge is a popular workout that honors Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2005. The challenge is typically performed on Memorial Day to pay tribute to fallen service members. The workout consists of the following:
- 1-mile run: Start with a one-mile run to warm up.
- 100 pull-ups: Complete 100 pull-ups, which can be done as strict pull-ups or with assistance.
- 200 push-ups: Follow the pull-ups with 200 push-ups.
- 300 air squats: Perform 300 bodyweight squats.
- 1-mile run: Finish with another one-mile run.
The Murph Challenge is renowned for its intensity, serving as a rigorous test of endurance, strength, and mental toughness. It has become a meaningful way for fitness enthusiasts to come together and honor the sacrifices made by military personnel.
For the past five years, our dedicated Lake House instructor, Mark Durinsky, has organized a Murph challenge for Seabrookers every Memorial Day, with one modification: 150 sit-ups instead of 100 pull-ups. This year, 27 committed participants from Mark’s semi-private fitness class embraced the challenge and completed it within an hour. Congratulations to all!
