Join us at the Mount Pleasant Pier and the Folly Beach Pier for a season of fishing tournaments!

Part of the Memorial Waterfront Park complex, the 1250-foot long Mount Pleasant Pier stretches out into Charleston Harbor under the foot of the Arthur Ravenel, Jr. Bridge. Along with beautiful views, the pier offers great fishing! The Folly Beach Pier is one of the best destinations in the Lowcountry for pier fishing. This breathtaking landmark stretches out 1045’ into the sparkling Atlantic Ocean and offers spectacular views, fishing, dining, tournaments, special events, and more throughout the year!

Online registration ends the Thursday before each tournament. On-site registration is available at 7 a.m. on the morning of each event. Folly Pier tournaments end at 2 p.m., and Mount Pleasant Pier tournaments end at 3 p.m. Tournaments are held rain or shine. An adult chaperone is required for participants ages 15 and under.

On Mother’s Day weekend, honor moms everywhere by supporting a cause that helps women and their families suffering from postpartum mood disorders. Postpartum Support Charleston is hosting the 13th annual Moms’ Run + Family Fun Day at 7 a.m. Saturday, May 7th at MUSC Stadium on Daniel Island (1990 Daniel Island Dr., Daniel Island).

Runners and walkers can join the 5K run/walk starting at the stadium and winding through Daniel Island before ending back at the stadium for Family Fun Day.  Click here to sign up. Registration is open now.

In 2015, nearly 700 people registered for the race. This annual certified 5K Moms’ Run is Postpartum Support Charleston’s largest fundraiser, allowing the organization to further its mission of educating, supporting and healing women suffering from postpartum depression and anxiety. Postpartum Support Charleston offers support for women going through PPD and their families as well as community resources and education plus grants for women who may need financial assistance getting treatment for postpartum depression.

Come y’uh! The Daniel Island Historical Society will pay tribute to the Lowcountry’s Gullah culture at its 2nd annual “Love Oak Lights: Illuminating Our Heritage” event on Sunday, April 24th.

More than a dozen artisans, speakers, vendors and other contributors will be on hand for the free, family-friendly festival to be held from 4pm – 7pm under the oaks at Daniel Island Children’s Park.

This event will present a wide array of activities celebrating Gullah customs and contributions, including ironworks demonstrations by the Philip Simmons Foundation, music and storytelling by The Plantation Singers, “Crossing the River” history walks led by local author Herb Frazier, Gullah cuisine by Cainhoy Chef B.J. Dennis, rag quilting and doll-making by Sharon Cooper Murray, “History and Haikus” poetry workshop for ages 8 and up, arts and crafts, Gullah fashions, burial customs, a drumlin performance at 4:30pm, and an “Art in the Park” session for artists of all ages. A variety of artisans will offer items for purchase as well.

The Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry is excited to present The Big Build special exhibit March 26 – September 24, 2016.

The Big Build exhibit is an exciting, hands-on and play-based exhibit where children are invited to “Be the Builder” and construct endless structures using KAPLA, LEGO, Imagination Playground blocks and many more.

In addition to manipulatives, The Big Build will feature a catenary arch, special toddler area, literacy connections and opportunities for children to explore engineering, design and construction concepts through play.

Travel back in time at Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site and help us celebrate “the birth of South Carolina” at our annual Founders’ Day Festival. Living history staff will bring to life the site’s fascinating history through a variety of programs and activities. Several groups of seventeenth-century re-enactors will interact with visitors in authentic encampments located within the reconstructed palisade wall that protected Charles Towne in the 1670s. Demonstrations will include the firing of blackpowder cannons and muskets, as well as cooking and other daily chores crucial to the colony’s survival. Site archaeologists will be available at the current excavation site to show visitors the latest research discoveries.

Zoos are great learning environments for young minds. Bring your toddler to the Animal Forest at Charles Towne Landing for “Toddler Time” and watch their eyes light up when they see the animals! We’ll read a story, talk about animals, and then take a walk to a habitat to actually see what we talked about.

This program is designed for ages 2-4. Please allow at least 15 minutes to walk from the parking lot to the Animal Forest outdoor classroom.

CCPR – Palmetto Pump and USA Climbing Competition – April 16th

PumpPalmetto Pump & USA Climbing Competition

Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission and Half Moon Outfitters present the Palmetto Pump and USA Climbing Competition. Come out to the Climbing Wall at James Island County Park on April 18 for a nationally-sanctioned event that will host 70+ climbers from around the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern US. This year’s event will be a Flash Format. Compete or just cheer for your local team!
