Fourth of July Parade Traffic Disruption

Due to the annual Fourth of July Parade, the usual traffic pattern on the island will be disrupted on the morning of July 4. Please plan in advance to avoid delays.

8:30 am – 9:45 am
Seabrook Island Road from Royal Pine through the Village will be closed to traffic. Please use Seabrook Island Road by The Lake House.

9:30 am
Seabrook Island Road in front of The Lake House will be closed until the parade passes. Use Seabrook Island Road through the Village.

Traffic on Seabrook Island Road will be one way counter-clockwise until the parade passes. Traffic will then return to normal.

These procedures for the parade have been planned and agreed on by The Lake House Management, the Head of Security and the Team Leader of CERT.

We apologize for this inconvenience, but the disruptions are to ensure a safe and fun parade.

Memorial Day Starts Summer Traffic

Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of summer, and we look forward to welcoming family members, personal friends, and summer visitors. As we all know, traffic can get congested at the gate as visitors arrive to spend their summer holiday on Seabrook Island.

Gate pass data shows that the peak hours of visitor arrivals are from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm during the weekend. During those times, visitors passing through the gate may average over 100 vehicles per hour! In addition, this means there will be more than the usual number of cars, pedestrians, and bikers. Please be patient and obey the rules and regulations concerning driving, walking, and biking.

If possible, you may want to plan your trips back to Seabrook Island sometime before or after these hours.

Please advise your personal guests, rental guests, and contractors arriving during operating hours to stop at the SIPOA Daily Pass Location (see below) to obtain their SIPOA gate pass.

Construction Begins to Alleviate Traffic on Johns Island

The Sunday, March 16 issue of The Post and Courier reported that Charleston County will begin construction projects to help with the traffic situation on Johns Island and West Ashley. These improvements are part of a larger project for Main Road from Bees Ferry Road to Betsy Kerrison Parkway. These improvements include:

  • Flyovers at the intersection of Main Road and US Highway 17
  • An interchange at Main Road and US Highway 17 for those who want to avoid the intersection
  • A bridge over CSX Railroad
  • A roundabout at the intersection of Main Road, Chisholm Road, and River Road

Most of the work will be done overnight, but currently, they are doing testing on various aspects of the construction. The project is scheduled to be completed by September 2028.

What this means for us is that there will be delays getting on and off the island on Main Road and US Highway 17. Please take this into account when you are heading to the airport or an appointment. An alternate route to the airport is going up River Road, through James Island to I-26.

Spring is in the air, and our oak trees will soon shed their leaves. Seabrook Island Property Owners Association (SIPOA) will commence leaf collection from the roadways using a street sweeper beginning March 17, 2025.

Residents are reminded that the street sweeper cannot remove piles of leaves that are 6″ deep or greater.

Leaves will be removed from the roadway as long as they are not 6″ or greater in depth. Leaf collection will continue for 6 weeks and end on April 25, 2025.

Wappoo Creek Bridge Openings

Wappoo Creek Bridge

Have you been stuck in traffic because the Wappoo Creek Bridge is open? This is the bridge on Folly Road that connects James Island to West Ashley. On the James Island side, the traffic can be backed up to Maybank Highway. On the West Ashley side, traffic can be at a standstill past the South Windermere Center.

The bridge is an “on-demand” bridge, that is, it will only open if a boater calls in and requests it. Even though boaters can call in, the bridge will only open at specific times.

The current opening schedule has been in effect since May 4, 2018. The drawbridge shall open on signal; except that the draw need not open from 6:00 am to 9:29 am and 3:31 pm to 7:00 pm, Monday through Friday, except Federal holidays. Between 9:30 am and 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday, except Federal holidays, the draw need open only once an hour on the half hour.

Wappoo Creek Bridge is a double drawbridge which means that two spans will open simultaneously. It was built in 1956 and is part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway system.
