SIAG December Artist of the Month, Pam Nelson

Please join the Seabrook Island Artist Guild for a reception
to meet Pam Nelson and view her lovely work.

Tuesday, December 3, 2024
4:30-6:00 pm
The Lake House

Pam Nelson first started expressing her creativity through drawing, dance, and song as an nonconforming young child. This unique point of view didn’t always win favor with teachers, so she concentrated on using her creative spirit later in life in corporate America by ‘thinking out of the box’ in her career in customer service, advertising, and market research.

Upon retiring four years ago from the financial services industry, Pam, and her husband, Milum Livesay, purchased homes in the Virginia mountains and Seabrook Island. Immediately, Pam went to work using her creative talents to begin painting in mixed media acrylics, learning oyster art, and hand building with clay.

Wappoo Creek Bridge Openings

Wappoo Creek Bridge

Have you been stuck in traffic because the Wappoo Creek Bridge is open? This is the bridge on Folly Road that connects James Island to West Ashley. On the James Island side, the traffic can be backed up to Maybank Highway. On the West Ashley side, traffic can be at a standstill past the South Windermere Center.

The bridge is an “on-demand” bridge, that is, it will only open if a boater calls in and requests it. Even though boaters can call in, the bridge will only open at specific times.

The current opening schedule has been in effect since May 4, 2018. The drawbridge shall open on signal; except that the draw need not open from 6:00 am to 9:29 am and 3:31 pm to 7:00 pm, Monday through Friday, except Federal holidays. Between 9:30 am and 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday, except Federal holidays, the draw need open only once an hour on the half hour.

Wappoo Creek Bridge is a double drawbridge which means that two spans will open simultaneously. It was built in 1956 and is part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway system.

Reminder: Help the Mt. Zion Holiday Fund

Let’s put smiles on the faces
of 158 children during the holidays.

We can only do it with your help!

The funds you contribute will be used to buy clothes, shoes, books, and toys. Every family also receives a gift certificate for a holiday meal. For 17 years, your contributions have made a merrier holiday season for over 1,400 students and their families. Often, ours are the only gifts they receive. School personnel identify the neediest families who desperately need our help.

You may make your check payable to Mt. Zion Holiday Fund and mail it to Charlotte Moran, 2530 The Bent Twig, Seabrook Island, SC 29455. Other committee members will be happy to take your checks as well. They are: Marilyn Armstrong, 843-768-9252; Paula Adamson, 843-768-4881, and Flo Gilson, 678-643-5755. Your checks may also be dropped off at the Seabrook Island Racquet Club or Golf Shop.

Every year school personnel tell us how much these gifts are needed and appreciated, all made possible by your generous donations. Maybe your donation will make your own holiday season merrier as well!

An Autumn of Learning for SINHG Members

SINHG members have kept up an active travel schedule as the organization’s autumn learning opportunities for members continues.

Twenty members traveled to Wadmalaw Island and the Barrier Oyster Farm, where members learned about the meticulous process of growing wild oysters and enjoyed sampling some of the freshest and tastiest oysters in the Lowcountry.

History took a front seat on two recent trips. One took members to the historic Huguenot Church in downtown Charleston, the fourth church on the site originally purchased in 1680 by religious exiles and the only active Huguenot church in the Americas.
