In 2016, the Town of Seabrook Island entered into an agreement with the AirMedCare Network to provide benefits to covered individuals for certain air medical transport flights originating in Charleston County. Under the town’s municipal membership plan, a “covered individual” includes:
- Any individual who owns property, wholly or in part, within the boundaries of the Town of Seabrook Island, SC (regardless of residency status);
- Any individual whose residence is located within the boundaries of the Town of Seabrook Island, SC, as documented on a valid South Carolina Driver’s License, South Carolina Voter Registration Card, or lease agreement with a term of at least six (6) months (regardless of property ownership status); and
- Any individual who resides with and is a member of the immediate household of an individual covered by (1) or (2).
To be eligible for this benefit, a covered individual must be flown by Meducare Air (or any other AirMedCare Network provider) to the closest appropriate medical facility. In addition, the transport must originate from a pick-up location anywhere in Charleston County.
Membership in the AirMedCare Network ensures that the covered individual will have no out-of-pocket flight expenses if flown by a network provider. Under the program, any costs not covered by the patient’s private insurance will be covered under the town’s municipal membership plan. If the patient is uninsured at the time of transport, Med-Trans Corporation will bill the uninsured person at the “Medicare Allowable Rate.” This coverage does not apply to air transport flights on non-network providers, or to flights originating outside of Charleston County.
The AirMedCare Network is the largest air ambulance network in the United States. Participating providers in the AirMedCare Network provide air ambulance services from more than 245 air medical bases across 32 states.
