Now Accepting Nominations for the Angel Oak Award

Do you know someone who should be nominated for this award? The Exchange Club of Kiawah-Seabrook is soliciting nominations for its 13th Angel Oak Award. The annual award was first presented in 2012 and recognizes a person who performs volunteer services that contribute significantly to the people and/or quality of life of Wadmalaw, Johns, Kiawah, and/or Seabrook Island. The award is named after the historic live oak tree on Johns Island which clearly represents the people, culture, and natural environment of the islands. The 2023 recipient, Dr. Louise Baucom, was recognized for her work with the Seabrook Island Hunger Awareness Foundation.

The recipient of the Angel Oak Award need not live on the islands mentioned above but the service noted for the award must have been performed on the islands. The Exchange Club of Kiawah-Seabrook will recognize the 2024 recipient at a banquet on May 21, 2025, and confer an honorarium of $5,000, which the recipient can designate for assignment to a charitable organization serving the islands. The recipient will also receive a memento and have his/her name inscribed on the Angel Oak Trophy, which is permanently displayed on the islands.

The Exchange Club is seeking nominations from the public and the deadline for submissions is February 28, 2025. Nomination information and forms can be found on the Kiawah-Seabrook Exchange Club website. Please contact Alan Armstrong at alan9631@comcast.net or 410-274-7545 if you have any questions.

REAL ID Requirement Deadline May 7

Remember REAL ID? In case you have forgotten, REAL ID is a federal identification card that shows you have met minimum security standards. After years of delays and postponements, effective May 7, 2025, every US resident, 18 years and older, must have a REAL ID compliant driver’s license (passport or military ID) to fly domestically, enter secure federal buildings, or visit military installations. This requirement, established by the REAL ID Act of 2005, aims to enhance security standards for state-issued identification documents.

Not sure if your drivers license qualifies? Here’s how to check:

All REAL ID licences have the gold star in the upper right corner of the license. If yours does not, and you are planning on flying domestically, here’s what you will need to do before May 7, 2025.
