A retired photojournalist for the Associated Press, Getty Images, and The Baltimore Sun, J Pat Carter is a three-time Pulitzer nominee and Eisenstadt Award winner. His career spans the spectrum of human experience, from covering major national news stories. These stories include running into the Oklahoma City bombing site as others were running out, riding out a tornado under a bridge while protecting a mother and her children, and his current work in conceptual portraiture and freelance photography for organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center and AARP. He is not short on powerful images and poignant stories.

Now is the time to organize your files and discard old, unneeded, or duplicate documents. Gone are the days when we have to keep backup pieces of paper. Most information is now available online and is easy to access.

This is also a good time to go paperless. Many companies, such as banks, credit cards, and insurance companies, offer this service. Not only is it safer, but it can also be helpful when you are away from home. A bonus is using less paper, which is good for the environment!

Since most of your documents probably have personal information, you don’t want to just throw them away. The best way to dispose of these documents is by shredding them.

Exchange Club Learns about the Ronald McDonald House

On Wednesday, September 2, 2026 Caroline Roach, Community Engagment Manager for Charleston’s Ronald McDonald House, spoke to the Exchange Club of Kiawah-Seabrook.

Her message was, “If there’s a sick child, there’s a sick family.”

When a child needs hospitalization, it can be a massive and costly disruption to the family, especially if the family lives a long distance away from the Charleston Area. The average length of stay at Ronald McDonald house is 24 nights, so the impact can be significant. There are families spending their savings to stay in hotels and residences or even sleeping in their cars so that their child can get the help they need. Ronald McDonald House was created to provide families with a safe, clean, and convenient living space at no charge while their child is in treatment. 

Charleston’s Ronald McDonald House presently has 32 bedrooms for families needing a place to stay, which is not nearly enough to meet the need. 1,600 families are currently on the waiting list for the house.  To better meet the need, the House is doubling its capacity, with a $34 million expansion project underway. 

There are a lot of ways that people can help with this important effort, ranging from providing meals to guests (Meals That Heal), volunteering in the house, or working on special projects. For more information on how you can help, please visit their website, RMHCharleston.org.

Session 1: Coastal Gardening for Native Pollinators

All are welcome to join us at St. Christopher Camp & Conference Center for the newest round of our sustainability workshop series!

Our first session this semester will be held on site in the Chapel of the Palms on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at 6:00 pm. The theme of the night will be “Coastal Gardening for Native Pollinators”. Tyler Harris, Associate Director of the Barrier Island Environmental Education Program, will be our main presenter.

Also included will be a tour of our newly established pollinator garden, made possible with grant funding from the Town of Seabrook Island and contributions from the Seabrook Island Garden Club.

WineLines: A Bit of CDP History

A colleague of mine once advised that, should I be the one ordering wine at a business dinner, I should always order Châteauneuf-du-Pape, because it is reliably good and everyone will be impressed that I could pronounce it.

At the time, I didn’t know the difference between red and white Zinfandel, so it was great advice. 

And it turns out to be a really interesting wine.  The name translates literally as “Pope’s new castle,” so named because the Catholic Papacy had moved to nearby Avignon, in southeastern France, in the 1400s.   The town of Châteauneuf-du-Pape is in the Rhône wine region and is known for its interesting terroir:  Vineyards are covered in large, round pebbles that absorb heat during the day and radiate it back to the vines at night.

The wine is also notable because its quality is regulated by local wine growers.  Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines are permitted to use a maximum of 13 grape varietals, but are mostly dominated by Grenache, often supported with Syrah.  A white version of the wine is also available, but in very limited quantities.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines are also noted for their distinct bottles, which can only be used by wineries that meet the local requirements.  Those bottles typically have a papal crest embossed onto the glass.

The wine itself is rich and bold, with notes of red fruits and earthy undertones reflecting the unusual terroir.  It also usually has a relatively high alcohol content.  Reasonably good bottles of the wine can be found in the $30-$50 price range.

Some wine snobs simply refer to it as “CDP” to avoid the matter of pronunciation. My advice is the same advice I received all those years ago:  Go for it, and enjoy.

Traffic Alert: Sept 10 Accident on Bohicket Road at 1:25 pm

We received a notification at 1:25 pm today, Thursday, September 10, about an accident on Bohicket Road near Ace Hardware and Dayspring Nursing Facility. Traffic is backed up in both directions.

Tidelines does not receive notification when an accident has cleared. Please use an app such as Google Maps, Traffic Maps, or Waze to see if the roads are passable.

Happy Rosh Hashanah

Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown on Friday, September 11 and is a festive time welcoming the Jewish New Year. This holiday starts the High Holy Days and culminates with Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Rosh Hashanah is filled with special foods, rituals and traditions. One of the most important rituals is the sounding of the Shofar, (a hollowed-out ram’s horn), to welcome the New Year. It is traditional to eat apples dipped in honey signifying hope for a sweet year. During the year, on Shabbat and festive occasions, Jewish people eat loaves of traditional braided bread known as Challah. On Rosh Hashanah, the Challah is baked in a round shape to symbolize the cyclical nature of life. Raisins are added to the dough for extra sweetness.

Another Rosh Hashanah ritual is known as Tashlich (“casting off”), in which pieces of bread are thrown into water while prayers are recited. As the bread, symbolizing the sins of the past year is swept away, those who embrace this tradition are spiritually cleansed and renewed.

On Rosh Hashanah, Jews everywhere greet each other with the Hebrew phrase “L’Shana Tovah,” which translates to “for a good year.”

This tournament benefits Operation Warm Heart, operated by the Joint Base Charleston First Sergeants Council, and provides immediate assistance to military families during times of unexpected hardship. Get the Scoop on Beach Management – Monday, September 14, 3:00 pm at Oyster Catcher Community Center. Steve Hirsch (SIPOA) and Patrick Barrineau (Coastal Science & Engineering) will present the planned sand scraping project that will take place in October 2026. Free Tax Prep Program Seeks Local Volunteers

VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) is an IRS program that provides free tax preparation assistance to seniors and low-to moderate-income taxpayers. VITA volunteers help taxpayers receive the credits and deductions they’ve earned.

Volunteers of all backgrounds and ages are welcome and are needed to serve clients in the Charleston area, including Johns and James Islands, with basic tax returns. No prior tax preparation experience is needed, and being comfortable operating a laptop computer is helpful. Tax counselors receive extensive free tax training and will become familiar with IRS/SC tax rules and regulations. The key to providing this service is local volunteers who are willing to help out.

Tax counselors are expected to be available at least four hours one day per week from mid-February through April 2027. The reality is that many people travel, so schedule adjustments can be made. It’s a great way to learn new skills, assist in helping others, and become more involved in your community.
