Green Day Showcases SIGSC Green Spaces!

Have you ever wondered which wooded lots may one day have houses built on them and which are preserved in perpetuity thanks to you and your conservancy? Then please come out and celebrate with us on Saturday, September 23  as the Seabrook Island Green Space Conservancy Board of Directors brings you Green Day! Begin by stopping by the Oyster Catcher Community Center between 2:00 and 2:30 to pick up your travel documents.

Visit as many sites as you wish until 4:00 pm, experiencing the uniqueness of each conserved property. Docents will share some special facts while stamping your Green Day passport. Each stamp earns you a raffle ticket to win prizes including a $100 gift certificate to Hege’s restaurant.

After 4:00 pm, return to the Community Center to go through customs and to join the celebration with former board members and property donors. Live animals from Camp St. Christopher’s Barrier Island may be your first stop on the front porch. The pure sounds of Bob Becker performing green tunes will draw you inside. Next gather up some homemade appetizers and a selection of beverages while perusing the environmental displays from several local groups.

Do you need a bird list or trail map? If so, you are in the right place. Make sure you keep your raffle tickets handy as you may be a lucky winner in the exciting drawings.

No Conservancy monies will be used on this day as the current SIGSC Board of Directors is funding Green Day to thank our community for their continuing support.

Together we can maintain our unique natural environment and keep the island’s property values strong. Please join us on September 23!

Eclipse Updates

There is a plethora of information in the media and on TV about the eclipse Monday.  We felt the following two articles are especially valuable and should be passed along to our readers.

Photographing and Viewing the Eclipse

A recent Post and Courier article explained that a camera’s lens amplifies the sun’s rays.  Putting solar glasses on the lens may not be sufficient to reduce the chance of damaging your eyes.

In addition, binoculars or a telescope might also be a problem, unless you use an eclipse-specific filter over the front of the lens.

Who Can See A Partial Eclipse

According to NASA  (https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/), the majority of the United States will be able to see at least a partial eclipse.

If your family or friends, who do not live in the path of totality, are wondering how much of the eclipse they will be able to see, they can search by their zip code at the following website.  It will give them the percentage of the eclipse as well as what period of time.  The website is:

Eclipse Safety Glasses Alert

The Post and Courier ran an article today warning people to make sure the glasses they have purchased are safe for viewing the eclipse Eclipse glasson August 21.

Don’t be fooled by the glasses having just the ISO marking.  One Tidelines editor checked her glasses with the suggested ones that the American Astronomical Society recommends per the P&C article.  The manufacturer’s name was similar to one on their website.  This morning, Amazon notified her that the ones she purchased through them cannot be verified as safe by Amazon and is refunding her money, even though they have the ISO sign.

The important point here is to double check the glasses you purchased.

The article from the Post and Courier can be accessed here.
