December 7th Abridged Safety & Security Minutes

The following is an abridged summary of the minutes from the December 7, 2016 Safety & Security meeting. A complete copy of the minutes is available in the archives section of the SIPOA website at http://www.associationvoice.com/ResourceCenter/15432/Library

Committee discussion topics:
• Trash Dumping Special Committee report: Dennis reviewed with the committee the results of the special meeting on trash dumping. Following much discussion, the S&S Committee unanimously recommended adding a $100 fine option to allow more flexibility based on the severity of the violation. Dennis will make this recommendation to the SIPOA Board.
• Uber Issue: The Committee reviewed the procedure for Uber admission through the gate, concluding that if the passenger has a pass no special permission is required.
• Passing on the roads policy: The Committee discussed a property owner concern regarding passing on SI roads, concluding that the current policy is in the SI bylaws and should stand.
• Gate passes for contractors: The Committee reviewed the SIPOA policy regarding admission of contractors through the gate, concluding that this is an operational decision. This procedure will be reviewed further after upgraded software is added when the new gatehouse is completed.
• COVAR: The Committee discussed the authority of SI Security to enforce parking violations.

Justin Willman Comedy-Magic Show to benefit Hallie Hill Animal Sanctuary

Think magic is just for kids? Think again. Magician and comedian Justin Willman heads to Sottile Theater on Jan. 14, for an 8 p.m. show. Willman has performed on Conan, The Tonight Show, Ellen, and @midnight. His first special Sleight of Mouth aired on Comedy Central earlier this year.

As if that weren’t enough, the show is also benefitting a great cause. All of the proceeds from the performance will benefit the Hallie Hill Animal Sanctuary, a nonprofit animal shelter in Hollywood, South Carolina. Hallie Hill provides food, shelter, and medical care to about 200 abandoned and abused animals. They are a strictly no-kill shelter and take in animals regardless of age or breed.

The Seabrook Island Garden Club welcomed the holiday season with the annual Holiday Open House on Sunday, December 4th.  A heartfelt “thank you” to the Holiday Open House Team for a joyous and successful day. This year approximately 120 Seabrook Island friends and neighbors were received at the Lake House. Thanks to Martha LeHane, Sue Lord, and the decorating team, the venue was dressed in holiday fare including spectacular flowers. With the leadership of Miss Charlene in the kitchen, the membership also shared a wonderful assortment of food and desserts.

Highlights from the Town Council Meeting on December 20, 2016

Councilman John Gregg reported several items related to the Public Safety Committee. The Emergency Preparedness pages of the Town’s website have been updated to include information determined to be important during the Town’s Hurricane Matthew after-action review. The next meeting of the Disaster Recovery Council (which includes representatives from the Town, SIPOA, Club, Marina, Camp St. Christopher, and St. Johns Fire District) will take place on January 5th and 6th. Since the focus of the January exercise will be “hurricanes,” the Town is inviting organizations such as the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office and Charleston County Emergency Management Department to participate.

Mr. Gregg attended November 18 meeting where FEMA and the South Carolina Emergency Management Department provided guidance on how to apply for FEMA’s Federal Disaster Grant Assistance for debris removal, emergency protective measures, repair of disaster-damaged publicly owned facilities, etc. He has submitted the Town’s request for assistance, providing details of the cleanup and repair expenses incurred by both the Town and the Utility Commission. FEMA representatives met with Town and Utility officials on December 16th to gather additional information, and they arranged to meet onsite with Utility Commission officials on December 21.

Utility Work to Begin December 19 on Seabrook Island

Seabrook Island Utility Commission logo SAVEFrom the Seabrook Island Utility Commission:

The Seabrook Island Utility Commission will begin work during the week of December 19th – December 23rd, 2016, on the water and sanitary sewer lines that are located in the marsh area between Up da Creek and Cat Tail Pond.

To enable the work to be completed in both an expedited and safe manner, the flow of traffic will be reduced to one lane on the marsh bridge located between Up da Creek and Cat Tail Pond during the hours of 7:00 am and 5:00 pm.

We understand the inconvenience this may have on those owners residing and needing to travel in the area of work.
