Mayors Address Road Safety

It is certainly not news that Main and Bohicket Roads have safety concerns. To address IMG_2400these, Seabrook Island Mayor Ciancio and Kiawah Island Mayor Lipuma joined together to write South Carolina Department of Transportation to request a safety audit.

According to the Mayors: “Based on an analysis of SCDOT transportation data, TRIP (The Road Information Program), a non-profit research group, identified Main Road, Bohicket Road and the Betsy Kerrison Parkway 6th in the list of South Carolina secondary rural routes with the highest serious accident rates in the 2002 to 2006 study period. During the four (4) year study period, there were three hundred fourteen (314) injury crashes, twelve (12) fatalities and four hundred fifty-nine (459) people injured. Population and traffic on Johns Island have increased since that study was completed and both are expected to increase in the short and long term. Speed on the two roads in question, both higher and lower than signed, is a problem. Enforcement on these roads is almost impossible, as there is literally no room to pull anyone over without creating a more dangerous situation. “

Because these roads are so dangerous the Mayors request: “We would hope that a safety study, such as we have described herein, would lead to incremental safety improvements on Main and Bohicket. It goes without saying, but we feel it must be said, that what is being requested is not the ultimate solution to the problem of Johns Island roads. Nothing in this request should be interpreted as our abandonment of our pursuit of longer term solutions to the road problems, such as implementation of the so-called Johns Island Greenway. “

Seabrook Mayor Talks Roads and Drainage to Villa Organization

Seabrook Mayor Ron Ciancio delved into the subjects of Johns Island Roads and town road drainage in a presentation to the Council of Villa Associations and Regimes (COVAR) meeting on Saturday, March 12, in the Lake House.

Mayor Ciancio detailed the results of a recent meeting with SCDOT District Engineer Robert Clark regarding deficiencies in Bohicket and Main Roads, which are part of the official hurricane evacuation route for Seabrook and Kiawah Islands.

The SCDOT has undertaken some recent improvements to the drainage system along Bohicket Road, including clearing ditches and replacing some damaged drainage pipes. As is widely known by now, Main Road at the approach to the Limehouse Bridge has been raised 6 inches in response to the severe flooding of last October.

At the insistence of the Charleston County Board, plans for the proposed controversial “supersteet” intersection at Main and Savannah Highway have been shelved. Until a source of funds to construct a grade separation (aka “flyover”) becomes available, the SCDOT is undertaking no other actions at this juncture to improve the intersection. Post and Courier Letter to the Editor – Seabrook Response

In a recent Letter to the Editor of the Post & Courier published on February 24th, the writer suggested that the various Kiawah Island entities planned to form an organization to advocate for new roads “especially a ‘greenway’” through the middle of Johns Island and to hire former South Carolina Speaker of the House Bobby Harrell to serve as spokesman for the organization. The writer further suggests that it is “expected” that the Town of Seabrook Island, the Seabrook Island Property Owners Association and the Seabrook Island Club would contribute to this effort.  We can all confirm emphatically that none of the Seabrook Island entities identified in the letter has any intention of contributing to the retention of Bobby Harrell. Each of the three organizations would support legitimate efforts to make Johns Island roads safer and less flood prone.

Shredding Day – March 4, 2016

Shred 360 will be at the Town Hall again on Friday, March 4 from 10 am until 1 pm in the contractor parking lot.  If you remember from the last Shredding Day, you can bring paper trash, computer disks and drives as well as old tax returns to be shredded.  Paper may be brought to the site in cardboard boxes, but they are not able to shred the actual box.

This is the free Shred Day that enables Seabrookers to safely destroy any of these items. Shredding items is one way to protect yourself from Identity Fraud.

The next Shredding Day will be on October 14, 2016

Construction Outside the Gate Monday, February 8

On Monday, February 8, 2016 the Town of Seabrook Island will begin cleaning and inspecting the storm water piping system along each side of Seabrook Island Road from Landfall Way to the traffic circle.

Eadie Construction will begin at the entrance to the Bohicket Marina and work up and down the roadway using two very large pump trucks from 8am to 5pm daily. Please proceed with caution when approaching or leaving Seabrook Island. There is only limited space to support the heavy truck loads of water and debris without parking on portions of the roadway. There will be additional signage and traffic control personnel in place to ensure safe passage.

This work is the beginning of a two to three year program to improve flood control, roadway design, signage, and landscaping that is functional and maintainable over the years to come. Mosquitoes in the Crosshairs Again

Charleston County Mosquito Abatement came out to Seabrook Island today checking the mosquito population. Inside the gate seemed to be clear. However, the Town Hall area and the ground along the Bike/Pedestrian path appears to be a breeding ground. So, the spray truck will be out tomorrow (Thursday, January 28) at Town Hall to spray the standing water there and then move up the bike path. Be aware of the truck moving slowly on the pathway. This should be between 8 AM and 12 PM.
