Information Meeting on Sales Tax Hike for Transportation Announced

As many are probably aware, Charleston County will hold a referendum in November regarding a proposed 1/2 cent increase in the sales tax.  Last week, the County released a list of potential projects that could be funded with the proposed ½ cent sales tax increase.  The  County also provided a list of projects recommended by North Charleston, the City of Charleston and Mt Pleasant, as well as projects that were identified as having regional implications.  There were several identified projects of potential interest to Seabrook Island residents, including “intersection improvements at US 17 and Main Road — presumably the so-called “flyover.”

The County has recently issued the attached news release announcing a series of public information meetings to discuss the referendum and to receive public input.  The meeting scheduled for June 20 at St. Johns High School (1518 Main Road) at 6:30 PM will be a good opportunity for Seabrook Island residents to express their views on the need for improvements to our road system and the need for a cross island parkway.

Highlights – Seabrook Island Town Council Meeting, May 24, 2016

Some meeting highlights are provided below. Note that these items and many others are explained more fully in minutes of the Town’s May 17 Ways & Means Meeting where the topics were discussed at greater length–see the Town’s website,  http://www.townofseabrookisland.org

Members of Seabrook Island Birders and SEADOGS are helping the Town enforce beach rules for dogs by informing offenders of the reason for the rules and pointing out where dogs are not allowed. Mayor Ron Ciancio noted that the Town is considering enhancing enforcement of its beach ordinance with an additional part-time code enforcement officer.

The Town Hall meeting on May 12 focused on talks by Senator George E. “Chip” Campsen III, Representative Peter M. McCoy Jr., and Robert Clark, District 6 Engineering Administrator, Engineering Division, South Carolina Department of Transportation. There were 70-75 attendees, and the speakers answered residents’ questions for about an hour following the presentation. The Town was told to expect a response by end of May to our request (filed jointly with the Town of Kiawah) for a Safety Audit of Main/Bohicket roads. Tropical Storm Bonnie Update

As of  9:00 am Sunday, 29 May 2016, the National Weather Service – Charleston reported cancellation of the Tropical Storm Warning as tropical depression Bonnie made landfall near the Isle of Palms. Tropical Depression Bonnie is now moving northward and is expected to turn northeasterly. Rainfall is expected to continue.

Tropical Storm Bonnie Update

As of  6:00 am Sunday, 29 May 2016, the National Weather Service – Charleston decreased the wind rating to below tropical storm force with gusts up to 40 mph and forecast an additional 1 – 3 inches of rain with potential for localized storm surge of up to 1 foot. Conditions are marginally favorable for tornadoes. Charleston County Emergency Management Department indicates that the high rip current risk remains in effect until 8:00 pm 29 May 2016.

Tropical Storm Update – Town of Seabrook Island Announcement

As of 5:00 pm on Saturday, 28 May 2016, the wind velocity of the offshore storm center attained Tropical Storm strength. Tropical Storm Bonnie is about 120 miles SE of Beaufort, SC. The Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect. Winds from 20 – 30 mph with gusts to 45 mph are forecast for Saturday night as Tropical Storm Bonnie comes on shore. Rainfall of 2 – 4 inches is forecast.

Weekend Weather Alert

Charleston County Emergency Management Department has issued the following weather alert from the National Weather Service-Charleston:

“Potential development of a tropical/sub-tropical depression is possible this holiday weekend with the threat of heavy rain.

The threat for flooding from heavy rain could be enhanced in downtown Charleston due to elevated astronomical high tides; and heavy surf and enhanced rip currents along the beaches.”

Town Sponsors Alan Fleming Tournament

The Town of Seabrook Island is sponsoring the Alan Fleming Senior Open Clay Court State Championships which will be held October 5th – 9th at the Seabrook Island Racquet Club for the second year in a row. The Town has contributed five thousand dollars ($5,000) to underwrite the Tournament. Mayor Ron Ciancio explained the reason for the Town support: “First and foremost, the Town of Seabrook Island whole heatedly endorses the tournament’s support of Respite Care of Charleston and that organization’s effort to support the victims of Alzheimer’s disease and their families.  In addition, we are cognizant of the positive economic impact the tournament has had, and will have, on our community.”

In return the Fleming Committee expressed its gratitude for the support of the Town. Susan Leggett, Tournament Chair, declared: “The Alan Fleming Tournament Committee is delighted to have the Town’s continued support of this notable tennis tournament. Their financial sponsorship bolsters the quality of the Tournament and broadens its appeal to players throughout the country.”

The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. on May 12th in the Live Oak Room of the Lake House. All Seabrook Island residents and property owners are invited.

Senator Campsen represents District 43 which includes portions of Charleston, Beaufort and Colleton Counties. He is chairman of the senate Fish, Game and Forestry Committee, as well as a member of several senate committees including judiciary and transportation.nclu

Representative McCoy represents District 115, which includes portions of Charleston County including Seabrook Island. He is Chairman of the Family Law and Probate Subcommittee and a member of the house judiciary committee.

Robert Clark is the SCDOT Engineering Administrator for District 6 which includes Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dolrchester and Jasper counties.

We expect that Senator Campsen, Representative McCoy and Mr. Clark will present prepared remarks on matters of interest, after which there will be an opportunity for a question and answer period.

New “Just Ask Me?” Program Seeks Volunteers

imagesDo you want to help provide visitors with essential Seabrook Island information this summer? The Club, Town, and SIPOA are initiating jointly the Just Ask Me? Program this month and looking for volunteers who are willing to answer questions and offer assistance to Seabrook Island renters and visitors.

What do you get for participating in the program? Your reward is the opportunity to share your knowledge of and love for Seabrook Island with others. You also get a cool Just Ask Me? hat and button, which you can wear when walking on the beach, bicycling around the Island, or dining at the Pelicans Nest. Your name, contact information, and home town will also be on a list that will be distributed by the Amenity Office to visitors.

This is an opportunity for you to share the strong sense of community we have on Seabrook Island. To volunteer, send an email to one of us below and you will be invited to an orientation session later this month.
