Information on REAL ID

REAL ID is the program through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) designed to ensure the identities of anyone boarding a flight and going into Federal government buildings and other secure Federal facilities.

There is no hurry to obtain a REAL ID. Your current, unexpired SC driver’s license will still enable you to do all the above until September 20, 2020. Starting October 1, 2020, you will need either a REAL ID or a valid US Passport or Military ID. Continue reading “Information on REAL ID”

Nighttime Lane Closures of Maybank Highway

logo icon
Charleston County announced on Twitter that there will be nighttime lane closures for storm pipe installation from Sunday, January 21, 2018 through Thursday, January 25, 2018 for Phase 2 of Maybank Highway Improvements Project.

Crews will be installing steel plates as part of the storm pipe installation. The temporary plates will be installed on Maybank Highway between River Road and Fenwick Hall Allee. Drivers are asked to use caution when traveling through the construction zone. All work is weather permitting.

The nighttime lane closures will begin Sunday night, January 21 through Thursday, January 25 between the hours of 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Flaggers will be directing traffic safely through the closures.

Drivers traveling through the project’s construction zone are asked to be aware of equipment and crews working in the area at all times
The plates are expected to be in place through Thursday, January 25, 2018.

This phase of the project includes the continuation of the lane from the Paul J. Gelegotis Bridge to the existing right turn lane at the intersection of River Road. The widening will help alleviate the afternoon congestion onto Johns Island caused by the merging of the two travel lanes.

Accident on Highway 17, Backup on Main Road

Mike Gorski of Island Transportation just reported an accident on Highway 17 right before you turn left onto Costco or right onto 526.

He says it is backed up all the way to Main Road.  He says even Main Road is backed up to the Limehouse Bridge because people can’t turn onto 17.

If you are heading to the airport or are pressed for time, you should go River Road through James Island.

Mike says there are fire trucks and police at the accident site so it may be awhile.
