Since we’re in France for part of this summer, it seems appropriate to write about the position of wine in today’s French culture. Wine has been grown in France since time immemorial, well Greek and Roman times anyway. So, wine has a place in French culture that’s special. But, during my lifetime, that’s changed considerably. The great wine growing regions – Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne, Alsace and the Rhone valley – continue to turn out world beating wines, but the culture (and fast growing environment) is changing, both in production and consumption.
Competition from New World wines has forced a more professional approach to wine making. Gone are the days when the only way to become a wine maker was to be apprenticed to an experienced master. Even the University of Bordeaux now teaches wine making; the department opened up long after University of California at Davis, for example
Today, almost every store sells wine, sometimes from a barrel; you bring in your empty bottle and fill it yourself. Why put your empty bottle in the recycling bin (often a bottle bank outside a store in Europe) when you can just refill it? The motorway service areas sometimes sell wine alongside food. Truck stops may have a fixed price and good value menu for commercial drivers, which can even include wine.

Seabrook Island Green Space Conservancy

Back in the late 1990s the permanent loss of green space and wildlife habitat resulting from the anticipated buildout of the Island was recognized by the Seabrook Island Property Owners Association (SIPOA). SIPOA took action to preserve undeveloped land as green space by establishing the non-profit 501 (c) (3) charitable corporation that is the Seabrook Island Green Space Conservancy. Through tax deductible donations and fundraising, Green Space has made it possible to preserve and enhance the natural environment on the Island.

Sturgeon Moon

After a rainout in July, let’s try for an August full moon bonfire! Join us on the beach for Seabrook Island’s Full Moon bonfire on Saturday, August 9, 2025.
The August full moon is the Sturgeon Moon. It was named by Native American tribes who fished for lake sturgeon during late summer. This month’s moon is set to come with a “celestial bonus.”
According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the Sturgeon Moon will dip below the horizon in the early morning hours, accompanied by a striking alignment of Saturn, Venus, and Jupiter. If clouds interfere, skywatchers will have another chance when Venus and Jupiter, the two brightest planets, will appear closely paired in the sky.
Come enjoy a pleasant evening with a bonfire on the beach with friends and neighbors. Visit with existing friends and meet someone new. There’s always plenty of room on the beach for everyone, so invite a friend, bring your houseguests.
To keep things simple, each person brings what they want: food, drinks, chairs, and a stick of firewood for a big bonfire. Nothing will be provided but a beautiful beach, a bonfire, and a full moon.
Hopefully, the weather will remain accommodating. People ask if the bonfire will be held if it’s rainy. The bonfire will be canceled if it is raining or rain is threatening, as few would be comfortable attending.
By terms of the permit, the fire needs to be out no later than 10:00 pm. The later sunset and moonrise times give us time for dinner before enjoying our time together on the beach.

The Seabrook Island Utility Commission (SIUC) has completed the structural upgrades to our water tower on budget and on schedule. The work was coordinated and 75% paid for by the three cellular carriers that use our tower for their equipment.
The work included replacing and strengthening the lateral and criss-cross supports on the tower. The round corral at the top of the tower was also strengthened to allow the three area cellular carriers to upgrade their equipment. The water tower was then repainted.

T-Mobile has nearly finished placing their new equipment on the water tower and removing their old equipment from the temporary tower. Verizon and AT&T will follow, with each company taking approximately two weeks to complete their work. Once complete, the temporary tower will be removed.
Although SIUC is not involved in the selection or positioning of each cellular company’s equipment, it is our understanding that the new gear each company is placing on top of the water tower should improve reception on the island.

It has been a couple of weeks of glorious sunrises, camaraderie, joy in hatchlings making their way to the sea, multiple false crawls, hope, coyotes, Nests 33 through 36, intense heat, and astonishing storms. Still, through all of this, our passion for helping the sea turtles remains undimmed. We have high hopes of more nests in August, and statistically, it is quite likely. Thanks again to all the people who have shared their stories, introduced us to their dogs, informed us about things they have seen, helped knock down sand castles, filled in holes, and picked up trash.
On July 23, Nest 33 was found by walkers Marnie Ellis, Sandy Snead, Milum Livesay, and Karen Reavis in the wrack about five houses north of the Club. 122 eggs were relocated north of Boardwalk 6. It was necessary to move the nest so far because of the sinkholes forming in the area between the Club and Boardwalk 6. Please be careful in this area.

In Charleston County, 31.3% the people experience food insecurity, with many of them children. How does that happen in our land of plenty?
To help these food insecure children, school programs provide free breakfast and lunch, and in some cases, dinner as well, during the week. But what about the weekends? That is where Backpack Buddies comes in.
We can’t do it without you—Backpack Buddies needs your help!
The Backpack Buddies Seabrook Island Annual Fundraising Campaign will run from August 4 to September 26, 2025. Once again, we are counting on the generosity and kindness of Seabrook Island residents, visitors, and guests to help raise $80,000. Donating is easy by using the Backpack Buddies Seabrook Island website. Donations can be made online via PayPal, credit card, or check.
Any amount is greatly appreciated, and just $250 will cover the costs for one child for the entire year. You can also join many fellow Seabrookers in supporting Backpack Buddies by becoming a “Friend of Backpack Buddies Seabrook Island” with a donation of $1,000 or more.
