SIPOA to be Featured at Audubon International Recognition Ceremony

You might have heard that SIPOA earned the prestigious designation of “Audubon International Certified Sustainable Community” last November.  We were the first private community in South Carolina to receive the award, and one of only six communities in the world.  Audubon International will conduct a recognition ceremony on March 15, 2018 to honor Seabrook Island’s commitment to creating a sustainable future through our development and implementation of sustainable management practices.  Heather Paton, SIPOA Executive Director, will represent Seabrook Island at the ceremony (to be held in Okatie, SC).

The Certified Sustainable Community award is the result of hard work since 2011 by many Seabrook volunteers and SIPOA staff who documented our accomplishments and plans in seventeen different focus areas that are relevant to Audubon’s three “Pillars of Sustainability”:  Healthy Local Environment, Economic Vitality, and Quality of Life.

The first phase of work was a community assessment where we established a baseline for the focus areas (e.g., Environment, Infrastructure, Governance, Land Use, Resource Use, and Communications) and earned Audubon’s Green Community Award.  In the second phase, we conducted focus groups and community meetings to gather property owner input, and then did a lot of analysis to establish comprehensive goals, outcome indicators, timelines, and measurable objectives for our work in each of the focus areas.  The result of that work, our Long-Term Sustainability Plan, was submitted to Audubon in August 2017.

In a third phase of work, we documented status of each of the items in our Long-Term Sustainability Plan.  SIPOA had either completed or had ongoing efforts for over 50% of the plan’s goals, leading to Audubon’s awarding us “Certified Sustainable Community” status.

SINHG With Us, a Weekly Summary of SINHG Events and Trips

3 Cheeses in 3 Hours:

On March 2, Seabrookers convened at the home of Kathy and Jeff Pompe for a class on cheese making.  Casey Price, the “Goat Lady’ from Jeremiah Farm and Goat Dairy, demonstrated to the group how to make triple pepperhack (aka spicy mozzarella), queso Mexicano fresco, and whole milk ricotta cheese.  The participants learned all about cheese making, including separating the curd and whey using a cheese cloth, adding flavor with spices and fresh grown herbs, and the different types of cheeses you can make using cow’s milk and goat’s milk. Fun was had by all!

Cheetahs Take Center Stage at Special SINHG Program

The international effort to save the cheetah, the world’s fastest land mammal and Africa’s most endangered big cat, will be explored by Dr. Laurie Marker, founder and Executive Director of the Cheetah Conservation Fund, in a special SINHG Evening Program on Tuesday evening, March 27th. Dr. Marker, who has worked with cheetahs since 1974 and earned her doctorate in the subject from Oxford University, established CCF’s research and education center in 1990 in Namibia, home to the world’s largest population of free-ranging cheetahs. Since then, CCF has expanded its reach with offices in the United States, Europe and Asia.

Once numbered in the hundreds of thousands throughout Africa and Asia, there are fewer than eight thousand cheetahs surviving today, almost all of them confined to rapidly shrinking habitat in Africa. “We’re a conservation organization working to combat the problems that afflict the human communities that live alongside cheetahs and threaten the cheetah as a species with extinction,” Dr. Marker describes CCF. Dr. Marker’s illustrated talk will explore the variety of methods and practices CCF has developed to minimize human-cheetah conflict and ensure a future for this highly endangered animal.

Cheetahs are uniquely adapted for speed, capable of sprints at more than sixty miles per hour during the hunt, a speed it can attain in little more than three seconds. With its long legs, slender body and specialized physiology, the cheetah is sometimes referred to as the greyhound of cats and is so different from other felines that it is the only member of its genus.

All Seabrook Island residents and guests are welcome at SINHG Evening Programs, which begin at 7:00 pm with refreshments and fellowship followed by the program at 7:30 pm. There is a $5 donation for non-SINHG members. Membership information can be found here.

Changes to the Lake House March Fitness Class Schedule

Lake House Class Information

Beginning Friday, March 9, The Lake House is excited to announce two new classes:

*STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

with Alison Standard

Fridays at 9:15 am

An excellent class for improving muscle tone, strength and stamina! The class is easy to follow and utilizes interval style workouts that include weight training, cardio intervals, body weight functional training and core work! Participation will result in improved joint mobility, improved stability and greater muscle fiber recruitment, all which help to elevate and sustain metabolic activity, thus providing a great overall conditioning workout. Interval training involves alternating segments of high-intensity exercise with periods of rest. This allows you to work more in a shorter period of time and it’s much more comfortable than spending the entire workout at a high intensity.

*HIIT to be FIT

with Michelle Peterson

Wednesdays at 9:15 am

This class combines high energy cardio intervals with strength training and core conditioning. Choose high or low impact while still getting a great workout. Work your whole body and build stamina in this energizing class.

*Please note, the above classes will start Friday, March 9 and continue until Zumba is able to return.

March Lake House Fitness Class Cancelations:
