King Tides in the Charleston Area December 3-6

King Tide is a commonly used term describing high tides that are higher than normal. They usually occur during a full or new moon or during specific seasons throughout the year. Charleston’s average high tide range is about 5.5 ft., but during a King Tide event, it can reach 7 ft. or higher. 

King Tides can cause flooding in low-lying areas, resulting in road closures on Seabrook Island, as well as the Johns Island and Charleston areas. This is particularly true when a king tide coincides with significant rain and/or wind.

We are excited to announce new programming coming this fall! All are welcome to join us at St. Christopher Camp & Conference Center for our new Sustainability Workshop series.

A big THANK YOU to all who attended our first Sustainability Workshop on rain barrels! Tyler Harris, Associate Director of the Barrier Island Environmental Education Program, provided us with a comprehensive overview of the components and purposes of rain barrels. Participants also had the opportunity to see some of the ways our staff is implementing water conservation on St. Christopher’s property. 

The second workshop in this series will take place in our Temple Conference Center on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at 6:00 pm. All are welcome to join us. We will be discussing invasive plant species in our area and what you can do about them.

Full Moon Bonfire November 5

Beaver Moon

November Full Moon Bonfire is happening!  Please join us on the beach for Seabrook Island’s Full Moon bonfire on Wednesday, November 5, 2025. This will be our final bonfire for 2025.  

November’s Full Beaver Supermoon reaches peak illumination and is the closest of the three Supermoons this year! 

Why the “Beaver” Moon? According to the Farmer’s Almanac, this is the time of year when beavers begin to take shelter in their lodges, having laid up sufficient food stores for the long winter ahead. During the fur trade in North America, it was also the season to trap beavers for their thick, winter-ready pelts. 

Hopefully, the weather will cooperate, clear and crisp. Plan accordingly, bring a chair, a friend or family member, a beverage/snack, and a piece of wood/log for the fire. Nothing will be provided but a beautiful beach, a warm fire, and a full moon.

People ask if the bonfire will be held if it’s rainy. The bonfire will be canceled if it is raining or rain is threatening, as few would be comfortable attending.

According to the permit, the fire must be extinguished by 10:00 pm.

Full moon bonfires will resume in spring 2026.   Stay tuned!

Behind the Scenes with the Seabrook Island Turtle Patrol


The weather is now getting cooler and most of us are thinking about packing up the beach gear, pulling out the cold weather clothing and even heading out to wherever we intend to spend our winters. Turtle Patrol season seems like a memory even though we still have one nest lingering near boardwalk 2 at the time this article was written.
