King Tides in the Charleston Area November 14 – 18

King Tide is a commonly used term describing high tides that are higher than normal. They usually occur during a full or new moon or during specific seasons throughout the year. Charleston’s average high tide range is about 5.5 ft., but during a King Tide event, it can reach 7 ft. or higher.

King Tides can cause flooding in low-lying areas resulting in road closures on Seabrook Island as well as the Johns Island and Charleston areas. This is particularly true when a king tide coincides with significant rain and/or wind.

The remaining 2024 predicted King Tides is November 14 – 18.

Remember to clear debris blocking the drains near your home before predicted King Tides and if your home is prone to flooding, you might want to prepare your ground level for flooding.

SCDOT warns: Please use caution in areas that are impacted by flooding. It takes just 12 inches of water to carry away most cars and just 2 feet of rushing water can carry away SUVs and trucks. Never drive around barricades or on streets where you can’t see the road. Manhole covers may pop up due to the water pressure under the road. Turn around, don’t drown.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) is leading the South Carolina King Tides Initiative to document the effect that extreme tide events have on our state’s beaches, coastal waterways, private property, and public infrastructure. For more information on King Tides and the Initiative, click here.

Please note that flooding may also occur if there is a normal high tide along with a large amount of rain and/or wind.

Holiday Canned Food Drive at The Lake House

November 1 – December 10, 2024

Goal – 5,000 pounds

One way to make our own holiday celebrations even more meaningful is to help our neighbors in need on Johns and Wadmalaw Islands. When you go grocery shopping, please consider purchasing a couple of extra cans of food, or even better, multi-packs of canned food items, for distribution to the clients of the Sea Islands Hunger Awareness Foundation (SIHAF). Protein items like hearty or chunky soups, stews, chili, corned beef hash, tuna, and canned chicken, as well as canned vegetables and fruit, are especially appreciated. Please check expiration dates before donating.

Donations and contributions can be delivered to The Lake House lobby. Place your items in the bin under the new donations sign behind the column. All donations will be weighed before they are picked up.

Together, we can fight hunger, one meal at a time!

Veterans Day Monday, November 11

Veterans Day is a day to reflect on the sacrifice and courage of all U.S. Veterans. It is the day that our country honors and thanks those men and women for their service.

To hear the official Veterans Affairs march Salute to Veterans, composed by COL Eugene W. Allen and performed by The United States Army Band, Pershing’s Own, click here.

Some Background on Armistice Day and Veterans Day

November 11, Armistice Day, marked the end of World War I. On “the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month,” in a forest near the French city of Compiègne, French, British, and German leaders met and signed an armistice that officially ended “the war to end all wars” that claimed the lives of more than 16 million people over four years.

President Woodrow Wilson originally proclaimed November 11, 1919, Armistice Day to honor the country’s servicemen who served during World War I. The date wouldn’t become a National Holiday until a Congressional Act in 1938 made it so. It would remain a holiday for this select group of soldiers, sailors, and marines until President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill that expanded its intention to celebrate the service of all servicemen and servicewomen from every American war.

It would remain known as Armistice Day for the next 35 years until Congress changed its name to Veterans Day on June 1, 1954. That name has remained unchanged ever since. The date of the Veterans Day celebration has also remained unchanged, except for a brief period of seven years when it was changed to the fourth Monday of every October in 1971 to make sure that it complied with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. This decision was eventually reversed in 1978 and this holiday has been celebrated on November 11 ever since.

Medical Village Proposal Comments Due November 14

Proposed Health and Wellness Village
Betsy Kerrison Parkway

Last February, after strenuous objections from local residents, the Charleston County Council denied a developer’s request to build a medical village on Betsy Kerrison Parkway. Now the developer has submitted virtually the same proposal again to the Charleston County Planning Commission.

The Kiawah Conservancy has issued an E-blast to surrounding communities that includes details about the revived proposal and provides information about how to submit comments. You can view the E-blast here.

The Seabrook Island Green Space Conservancy opposes this proposed development for the reasons stated in the Kiawah Conservancy E-blast.

Comments must be submitted to the Planning Commission by 5:00 pm on November 14, 2024. You can also submit comments to Jenny Honeycutt, Seabrook Island’s representative on the Charleston County Council. You can contact Ms. Honeycutt by phone at (843) 693-6447 or by email at jhoneycutt@charlestoncounty.org.
