Preparing For the Cold Temperatures to Grip the Charleston Area Over the Weekend

As we prepare for the cold, freezing temperatures over the weekend, homeowners should follow the preventive measures urged by The Red Cross listed below.

If you experience a power outage, call Berkeley Electric at 1-888-253-4232.

Keep your cell phone charged.  Make sure all emergency numbers are updated on your cell phone.  Download the Red Cross Emergency App for instant access to advice on what to do in emergencies and disasters like winter storms.

Prevent Frozen Pipes              unknown-1

Let the cold water drip from faucets served by exposed pipes or pipes in exterior walls. Running water through the pipe – even at a trickle – helps prevent pipes from freezing

Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage or in walls adjacent to the garage.

Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.
Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.

If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55ºF.

More information on preventing and thawing frozen pipes is available at www.redcross.org

Bring pets/companion animals inside during winter weather. Move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas and make sure that their access to food and water is not blocked by snow drifts, ice or other obstacles.

Protect Yourself from Freezing Temperatures        images

Avoid unnecessary exposure to the cold. Be aware of both the temperature and the wind chill when planning outdoor activities. When you prepare to go outside in severe cold weather, please remember the following:

Wear a hat, preferably one that covers your ears, as most heat is lost through your head. Dress in layers to help retain heat; remove layers as needed if you become too warm. Mittens provide more warmth to your hands than gloves.

Johns Island Farmers Market is Open Through the Winter!

All other markets in town are closed until spring, but that doesn’t mean locals must give up their farmers market fun and delights! The Johns Island Farmers Market launches into its 4th year of operation on Saturday, January 14th. Charleston’s only year round farmers market is open every Saturday, rain or shine, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at 3546 Maybank Highway, across from the Johns Island Public Library.

The market started on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, with 20 weekly vendors and has expanded to over 50 local farmers and artisans, delicious prepared food vendors, and live local musicians. The goal of the Johns Island Farmers Market is to be a one-stop shop to satisfy everything on a shopping list sourced locally and sustainably while also educating the community, establishing connections, and helping to shift lives in a loving, greener direction.

The year round market is always accepting new farmers and artisans who need a way to connect with the local community. Founders, Frasier Block and Blue Laughters, want to serve as a year round store front for local farmers and businesses and be a reliable source people can count on for shopping all year.

“We are thrilled to support and connect lots of new and returning farmers, small businesses, and entrepreneurs throughout this new year,” said Frasier Block. “It’s a great opportunity to know your local farmer/entrepreneur and get a majority of your shopping list sourced locally; our market is proud to provide that each week.”

Full Moon Bonfire – Thursday, January 12 at Boardwalk 1

Full Moon Bonfire
Thursday January 12, 2017
Sunset – 5:35 pm
Moonrise – 6:08 pm
High Tide (Rockville): – 8:18 pm
~ Full Wolf Moon ~

Unfortunately our December Full Moon Bonfire was rained out but the extended forecast looks promising for this month. Come join your friends and neighbors for an enjoyable evening on the beach with a warm fire and hopefully another beautiful moon rise out of the ocean. For January, we’ll meet again near the beach end of Boardwalk 1.

To keep things simple, each person brings what you want: food, drinks, chairs and a stick of firewood for a big bonfire. Nothing will be provided but a beautiful beach, a bonfire and, hopefully, a full moon. As a reminder, bring aged firewood as the remains from Matthew are not yet ready to burn even though we’d all like to reduce our piles.

Put these dates for the Full Moon Bonfires on your calendar:

Friday, February 10
Sunday, March 12
Tuesday, April 11

There’s always plenty of room on the beach for everyone, so invite a friend or bring your house guests.

Community Meeting on January 12: Issues and opportunities related to Seabrook Island’s Environment and Agriculture, Public Safety and Emergency Management, and Communications

All Seabrookers are invited to an important get-together on Thursday, January 12th, 5 PM to 6:30 PM, at the Oyster Catcher Community Center. Wine and refreshments will be served!

Stage 2 of the Audubon International Sustainable Communities Program (AISCP) is designed to help our citizens and leaders identify what enticed us to invest in Seabrook Island and decide what is needed for the community to succeed in the future.

In 2008, SIPOA and The Club adopted a shared Vision that names some important characteristics of success—residential, lifestyle amenities for all ages, natural/forested oceanfront environment, and recreation and leisure facilities. AISCP is looking deeper into these areas and more, in order to build an action plan for ensuring that we continue to offer robust quality of life for our residents, a healthy local environment, and economic vitality for our personal and community investments in the Island.
