The 2025 Alan Fleming Tournament October 2-5

The Alan Fleming Tournament will return to Seabrook this fall, October 2-5, 2025.  The event, which is sanctioned by the United States Tennis Association, is widely recognized as one of the premier amateur tennis tournaments in the country.

This year the Fleming Tournament will again be managed by the Seabrook Island Club, as it has become one of the signature events held on the island.  In keeping with tradition, the tournament, in addition to offering great tennis, will help support local charities. This year the Blessing Basket has once again been named the designated charity.

Tournament organizers expect more than 300 players to participate and the tournament’s success relies on the support of scores of volunteers. Anyone interested in helping should contact tournament committee chair Mary Anne Rayfield at maryanne.rayfield@gmail.com. Volunteers are needed for assistance with player registration, parking and court maintenance, among other things.

Sponsorship opportunities are also available and help to enable the tournament to attract some of the country’s top players. For information about sponsorships, contact Bill Good at bgood1414@gmail.com.

Much more information will become available as tournament plans develop. But for now – plan on attending – or volunteering for – one of the best tournaments of its kind right here on Seabrook!

Who Does What?

Do you know which entity is responsible for what? We publish this post from time to time because it can be confusing to sort out what each entity does.

There are three entities on Seabrook Island that contribute to the quality of life we enjoy in this community.

The Town of Seabrook Island (TOSI) operates under the Mayor-Council form of government that determines matters of policy, insures that laws and ordinances are fully executed, and oversees the annual budget of the town.

The Seabrook Island Property Owner Association (SIPOA) is located within TOSI and provides community governance and municipal-type services such as infrastructure maintenance, recreational services, and trash collection. It manages common areas and enforces community rules.

The Seabrook Island Club is a private club that provides a variety of amenities on the island for its members.

To learn more about each of these entities and more, click on continue reading.

When an emergency arises, these are the appropriate resources to contact:

Fire/Rescue/Sheriff: Call 911 for all emergencies.
Power: Berkeley Electric (843-559-2458)

March 10 Update: Seabrook Island Master Plan

The Phase 2 ideas of the Kuo Diedrich Chi (KDC) plan are more complex and still require much review and revision. This phase consists of longer-term concepts (5-15 years) that are intended to be visionary potential options with the understanding that they will be revisited and further evaluated in the future. The ideas center on the Gardens, Nature Gateway, the Racquet Complex, the Equestrian Center, and the North Campus.

THE GARDENS  – KDC sees this area as one that has the most potential for change and improved utilization.

  • Community Garden changes would include additional plots, a more useful layout, and additional parking.
  • New “The Garden House” for SIPOA and SIC back-office personnel.
  • Potential for limited workforce housing.
  • Consolidation of Storage and Support Facilities.
  • New offices and lab space for the Seabrook Island Utility Commission.

NATURE GATEWAY – This is the existing Oyster Catcher area. The KDC ideas include a couple of options for better use of the space (and as with all of the ideas, the community will have an opportunity to provide input on these different opinions).

  • Improved Beach Access and Parking.
  • Option 1 – New building, including the amenities currently provided in the existing space, with the existing pool.
  • Option 2 – Change the area into a Nature Park with no buildings and no pool.

RACQUET COMPLEX – KDC commented on how effective the recent renovations were and only provided a few small changes to this area to make it more accessible and more appealing.

  • Convert the current retail area into a retail and Lounge space.
  • Extend the veranda-covered seating area.

EQUESTRIAN CENTER – KDC loved this area and offered one addition to encourage additional usage.

  • Add an “Equestrian Discovery Room” to showcase the facility and the horses.

NORTH CAMPUS – The ideas presented here are larger in scope and incorporate suggestions for better usage of this area to promote the cross-island culture and include all three entities.

  • New “Seabrook Landing” Village and Green.
  • New “Marshview” Restaurant utilizing the existing SIC office location.
  • Modifications/consolidations of the SIPOA, SIC, and TOSI offices and Real Estate Center to house the front office personnel for the three entities.
  • Enhanced event space for the community.

As stated in earlier posts, all of the ideas/concepts are a work in progress, and KDC is revising their thoughts based upon input.

January 6 Update: Seabrook Island Master Plan

We hope you enjoyed the holidays with family and friends! As we enter 2025, here is what you can look for regarding the next steps in the Master Planning process.

  • The next major checkpoint will be on February 11. On that day, Kuo Diedrich Chi (KDC) will be on the island to share their initial thoughts and seek input and feedback. That meeting will involve the Master Plan project team, SIPOA, SIC, and TOSI leadership teams, as well as the Focus Group members.
  • This timing will allow for the sharing of directional top-level concepts at the SIPOA and SIC Annual Meetings, which are a few days later. This work is part of Step 3 of the KDC process.

October 24 Update: Seabrook Island Master Plan

The second step of the Kuo Diedrich Chi (KDC) Master Planning Process, Focus Groups & Initial Engagement, has been completed. We want to thank all of the volunteers who participated in the focus groups.

The ideas and open communication were excellent in all 11 sessions. (See new FAQ #18 for a list of the focus groups and Ambassadors).

NEXT PROCESS STEP:

November 6 -8: KDC will hold an internal workshop where they will begin developing initial short, medium, and long-term concepts that will be refined over the next month. (Step 3 of the process).

The Gatsby Orchestra Performance Open to All Seabrookers

The Gatsby Orchestra

Tuesday, October 29, 2024, 7:30 – 9:00 pm
Seabrook Island Club, Seabrook Island, SC

Kiawah Arts & Cultural Events Council is sponsoring this event which is open to everyone, not just Kiawah residents or Seabrook Island Club members. Beverages may be purchased using a SI Club card, amenity card, or cash (no credit cards).

Party like it’s 1920 with the Gatsby Orchestra! Founded by Bill McSweeny in 2019, this orchestra is a standard 1920s-style ensemble crossed between traditional jazz and World War II-era New Orleans swing music. The orchestra’s motto is “where you take center stage” because it considers audience participation a central element of its music. Put on your 20s-themed clothing and dancing shoes because attendees are invited to come early for an optional Charleston dance lesson 30 minutes before the show at 7:00 pm.

September 9 Update: Seabrook Island Master Plan

Seabrook Island Club, Seabrook Island Property Owners Association and the Town of Seabrook Island are working together to develop an aligned long term Master Plan for the community. This is the fourth update. If you missed reading the first three, click here and type Master Plan in the search bar.

We are so excited that so many of our friends and neighbors are interested in the upcoming Focus Groups for the Master Plan. Over 140 of you have already filled out the form to participate.

The sign-up form will be available through September 12 if you want to submit your request to participate. The Focus Groups will be assigned during the week of September 15, and all participants will be notified soon after. Once Focus Groups are established, planning meetings will be set up in September, prior to Kuo Diedrich Chi (KDC) coming in October to meet with each Focus Group, in order to be fully prepared for the KDC visit.

We continue to receive questions on cost and a desire for more detail beyond what is in FAQ #4. Since we are just at the start of the process, there are no plans or projects identified nor associated costs or detail funding required (beyond the consulting fee of $175K).
