Chili Cook-off Recap 2017

In addition to the fabulous weather yesterday, the 3rd annual Bohicket Marina Backpack Buddies Chili Cookoff was an overwhelming success! A heartfelt thank you to all who attended, volunteered, donated, baked, and supported the fundraiser.

A special thank you to all the individuals as well as businesses that cooked 5 gallons of chili and participated to support our programs.

Thanks to the hard work of Todd Gerhardt, over $18,400.00 was raised. The Gorski challenge (which matched donations over the past 2 weeks) added an additional $8600.00, bringing the grand total to over $27,000.00 raised for Backpack Buddies and The Kiawah Women’s Foundation, all supporting local, hungry children on the weekends.

The Red Knots Are Here!

Join us for Seabrook Island Birders (SIB) / Audubon Red Knot Training.

The Red Knots are on our North Beach shore in growing numbers, as they refuel and rest as a part of their incredible migration from Patagonia to breeding grounds in the Arctic. By mid-April thousands of Red Knots will be on our beach, as they begin to turn their beautiful reddish breeding color.

If you’re interested in becoming better informed on the Red Knot, SIB has scheduled a two-hour training session on Tuesday, March 28, 10:00 am to Noon, at the Oyster Catcher Community Center. This program is free for all who attend.

To enroll in this interesting, informative, and important program, please click here:  REGISTER NOW

In addition, there is a birding walk on North Beach scheduled on Wednesday, March 29 from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm if you would like to view the Red Knots (hopefully!) the morning after the training. Please also sign up for the walk now! (Please note you can attend one or the other or both!)

To register for the walk as well as more information about SIB, visit us at SeabrookIslandBirders.org .

Yin Yoga “Pop-Up” Workshop At The Lake House

Yin Yoga “Pop-Up” Workshop

When: Sunday, March 26, 2017
Time: 4:15 pm – 5:15 pm
Where: Live Oak Hall of The Lake House
Cost: $12

Want to stretch more deeply, focusing on the deeper connective tissue in the low back, hips and legs?  Yin Yoga is a passive practice where the surface muscles are relaxed. Yin Yoga gets more into the connective tissue, joints, fascia, ligaments and tendons of the body.

The emphasis is between the navel and the knees. Most of the postures focus on the low back, hips, and sometimes the shoulders and are done while seated, supine (on your back) or prone (on your stomach). A posture like Downward Facing Dog may only be used as a transition.

Postures are held with your muscles relaxed for 3-5 minutes. The key is to let go, release and allow yourself to go deep into these areas that may have become stiff and immobile through time.

This workshop is defined as semi-private with a limited number of spots and is not included as part of the group schedule. Charges for the workshop are placed in your Property Owner/Club account.

For more information or to register, please contact Natasha Stevens at noo.stevens@gmail.com.

Website for Respite Care Charleston goes Live!!

Respite Care Charleston (RCC) is proud to announce the launch of its new and improved website: respitecarecharleston.org. Link to it and you will see many familiar faces.

RCC enhances the quality of life for individuals with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia through social day programs, caregiver support groups, and community education regarding dementia and the benefits of respite care.

RCC has been a great resource to those on this Island with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. This disease has no cure and the day programs give the caregivers a few hours to themselves while providing mental stimulation, gentle exercise, and fun-filled activities for their loved ones. The support groups provide a safe place to laugh, cry, and learn from others who “truly know.” Many Seabrookers have volunteered their time and talent for this organization, including assisting with social day programs, providing art therapy, educating the public about RCC and serving on its Board of Directors. In both 2015 and 2016,  RCC was the recipient of the Fleming Fundraising Initiative.

RCC sends a message of sincere gratitude to Seabrook!

Candlelight Yoga – Tuesdays at The Lake House

Join Ursel Harmon at The Lake House for Candlelight Yoga on Tuesdays evenings at 6:00 pm.  This is an ongoing class and is included in the unlimited month of classes fee or the cost is $10 for residents, $15 for guests.

Experience this slow-paced gentle yoga class, with emphasis on breathing, relaxation and gentle stretching. Various options are given allowing you to move at your own comfort level. This class is perfect for everybody, beginners all the way up to the more advanced practitioners. Come on out and join us!

Still not sure about Yoga?  According to the Yoga Alliance there are 10 reasons why you should practice Yoga:

1. STRESS RELIEF: Yoga reduces the physical effects of stress on the body. By encouraging relaxation, yoga helps to lower the levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Related benefits include lowering blood pressure and heart rate, improving digestion and boosting the immune system as well as easing symptoms of conditions such as anxiety, depression, fatigue, asthma and insomnia.

2. PAIN RELIEF: Yoga can ease pain. Studies have demonstrated that practicing yoga asanas (postures), meditation or a combination of the two, reduced pain for people with conditions such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, auto-immune diseases and hypertension as well as arthritis, back and neck pain, and other chronic conditions. Some practitioners report that even emotional pain can be eased through the practice of yoga.

The Trend Was Definitely Green

Thanks to the generosity of the Seabrook Island Conservancy supporters at the 2017 Green Space Gala, the trend for Seabrook Island continues to be GREEN.

The lucky 300 reservation holders for the annual sold out event arrived with open wallets to show their love of our special environment and to help preserve green spaces in perpetuity.

A hardworking band of volunteers led by Conservancy president and gala chairperson Jeri Finke created an atmosphere of fun and indulgence for attendees at the March 12th event. The Charleston community outdid itself by contributing a vast array of items which created enthusiastic silent and live auction bidding. Plus the “Pick a Leaf” grab bags filled with donations were actually quickly grabbed up.

Auctioneer Dave Mathews kept the fun going with the ever popular Heads or Tails game. (See picture) The kind finalists banded together and agreed to donate the second half of the over $4000 pot back to the Conservancy.

Our accounting duo of Bob Adamson and Bob Norris continue to compute the exact dollar amount raised but declared it the most successful gala in the Conservancy’s history. The hope is that the funds will allow the purchase of the Conservancy’s 24th property to maintain Seabrook Island’s trend toward Green!

Sea Islands Cars and Coffee, Saturday 3/18

The next Sea Islands Cars and Coffee is March 18th, from 9 am until 11 am at Freshfields Village. This is the 3rd year anniversary of what has become a popular monthly event. Our February Cars and Coffee was one of our best ever, in terms of number and variety of cars and spectators.

We hope March will be even bigger and better. As a reminder, we will not be holding Cars and Coffee in April this year. Instead, please plan to attend “Cars on Kiawah” at Ocean Park on May 6th. Registrations are moving at a rapid pace and it looks like we will have about 250 great cars on display. Exhibitors are encouraged to register your cars through clubs you may be a member of or as individuals exhibitors via our website, www.kiawahconcours.com.

Thanks for all the support over the last three years!

TaeBo at the Lake House on Saturdays

Saturdays, 9:45 am at The Lake House

What is TaeBo?
This class incorporates balance, coordination and cardiovascular endurance. It is a combination of boxing and kickboxing moves without the gloves or any physical hitting and aerobic exercise set to fun music. Don’t be intimidated by the combination – it is fun!

Who can take a TaeBo class?
Anyone! This class can be enjoyed by any exercise level. Beginners will find the class fast paced but achievable as the movements will be taught in a slower pace and broken down for ease of learning. Regular attendees will be constantly challenged to take the moves to the next level with higher level options shown as well. Everyone will move at the pace that fits their own comfort and exercise level.

What do I need to take the class?
An open mind ready to learn new exercises. An understanding that everyone starts at the beginning, so your first class won’t be perfect. A sense of humor and willingness to have a little fun and make the class your own.

Join Elizabeth Stober and fellow Seabrookers on Saturdays at 9:45 am for TaeBo!!!
