Pulitzer Prize winner takes the SOBTC stage

Although better known for his iconic Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, this dark comedy is a masterpiece and generally considered to be Albee’s finest work.

The New York Daily News referred to it as “Powerful…A beautiful play filled with humor and compassion, and touched with poetry…with the stature and eloquence of a classic.”

Brown & White Pickup Still Scheduled

The Brown & White pickup is still scheduled for Friday, October 2, despite the rainy conditions.

Furniture, appliances, etc., may be put out curbside (by 7:00 am). Hazardous materials (batteries, paint, etc.) may be brought to the maintenance facility (SBI Rd, behind the Garden Plots) for safe disposal.

What is the purpose of Brown & White pickup?
This pickup is intended for those larger items which are not acceptable for the standard weekly pickup and would normally have to be taken to the County landfill facility on Bees Ferry Road in West Ashley. SIPOA offers this special pickup quarterly, as a convenience to our owners.

What is okay to put out curbside?
Furniture (all sorts), appliances (provided they were not removed as part of a contractor job, see below), lawn equipment, most other large-size goods which would not be acceptable for the regular weekly pickup

What is NOT okay to put out curbside?
– Hazardous waste such as paint, fluorescent lights, and batteries (take these to the maintenance facility on the same day, Priority-1 personnel will be standing by from 7:00-3:00 for collection and safe removal)
– Waste generated by contracted workers in the course of doing a job (contractors are responsible for removing their own project waste, such as carpet, floor boards, cabinets, etc., from Seabrook Island property)

When is the next pickup?
The next pickup will be scheduled to correspond with the Annual Meeting weekend in February. We move the January pickup to this date because so many owners are on the island, allowing us to offer this service to a wider group.

Kiawah Arts Council – Pure Theatre Presents Rapture, Blister, Burn – October 17th

raptureblisterburn-690x310PURE THEATRE presents RAPTURE, BLISTER, BURN on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at 7:30pm at the Turtle Point Clubhouse
Ticket Release to the Public 10/2

This whip-crack theatre comedy takes a look at Catherine and Gwen, who, after grad school, chose polar opposite paths and now, decades later, are unfulfilled in polar opposite ways. Each woman covets the other’s life, commencing a dangerous game of musical chairs—the prize being Gwen’s husband. With searing insight and trademark wit, this comedy is an unflinching look at gender politics in the wake of 20th-century feminist ideals.

County Council Acts on “Flyover”

At the 29 September meeting of Charleston County Council,  approval was given to the Finance Committee recommendation to begin negotiations for termination of the existing contract with SC DOT relating to the proposed “superstreet” at the intersection of US 17 and Main Rd.

Council also approved a motion outlining Council’s guidance for objectives related to the approved negotiations including: (i) termination of the existing contract to release the $1.5M committed by Charleston County; (ii) widening of Main Road between Bees Ferry Road and the Main Road intersection with River Road; (iii) address of drainage issues of Main Road that resulted in recent flooding; (iv) application of the released $1.5 M to start of design work, environmental impact studies and the like preparatory for construction of a separated grade renovation (overpass) of the US 17 and Main Road intersection.

It was noted that until a design is proposed for which costs can be developed, Charleston County can not pursue funding for construction.

Turtle News – Thank You to the Inventory Team

8-1-15 Inventory-1 2nd Inventory-9658 (1)
I want to thank all of the members of the Inventory Team for their participation this season!

We had a record breaking year – 75 Nests!!  We had our challenges which always include something new!  This year included the cut taking place, again trying to find suitable places for relocations which were many, lots of rain and high tides and our new one – HUMANS!  With our very LARGE nursery this year, it was a hot spot for tourists to hang out at night and the lights from rental homes beckoning our nursery hatchlings to pay them a visit!  Thanks for all your efforts in helping us deal with all of the above!

Beautsie will soon be sharing the total statistics for this year.  I would like to share some statistics I keep for the Inventory Team.

This season we spent 35 days performing inventories starting on July 8 and ending on September 27.  We performed 27 public inventories with an average of 23 team members participating at each one.  Thank you so much!  This is an outstanding level of participation increasing from 17 per inventory last season!  20 of the 75 nests were inventoried privately as a result of circumstances including rain and high tides, wild nests, collapsed dunes, etc.  The team personally assisted 277 hatchlings to the water this year.  This definitely demonstrates how important our work is.  We saved a lot of babies!

We had mostly beautiful days on the beach except for – a few days were rainy, some threatening thunderstorms, some driving rain, and our favorites – black biting flies, biting no-see-ums, biting ants, and other biting bugs in general!  Why must they all bite?  We need more ‘love bugs’ who just land on us, mate and leave!

I want to send a special thanks to our Junior Patrol Team which includes, Hannah Seabrook, Cailey and Gavin Duguid and Sarah Quinn!  It is so much fun to work with them and I am inspired by their commitment and dedication.  They are our future!  Next season will be Hannah’s last season as a Junior Patrol member.  She will be 16 in September of 2016 and will become a licensed permit holder in 2017!!  Hannah has been working with the patrol since the age of 7!

Unfortunately, we did not know that on September 14 Nest 65 would be our last public inventory and the final two hatchlings we would see this season!  These two were adorable and put on a great show for the spectators!
See you all next season!

iOS Security Hack Requires Attention

If you’re one of the large number of people on the Island who own an iPhone or iPad, be aware of the worst security hack in iOS history that recently took place. Otherwise legitimate developers used infected code called “XCodeGhost” downloaded from a Chinese web site. Hundreds of apps, most of them in the Chinese App Store, were affected. There is no way of knowing how far the bad code has leaked out beyond China.

There are basic precautions everyone can use to avoid having an infected iPhone or iPad cause a personal security breach. The folks at CultOfMac.com have a useful article that includes a link to a list of affected apps that should be purged from your device until a developer patch has been issued. Read the article here.

Apple has posted a bulletin on the issue here. While this does not appear to be a severely malicious code at this juncture, the actions suggested are precautionary in nature. In other words, be aware of any strange dialog boxes that pop up on your mobile devices or attempts to get you to “confirm” your Apple ID–good advice under any circumstances.
